Acoustic Guitar Lessons - How Crucial Is The Quality Of The Guitar To A Musician's Overall Sound?

After listening to a great blues guitar performance, one of the most common questions that comes by the people listening is 'what make of guitar are you playing' ? This reflects a popular misconception about a guitarist's performance, namely that it's the instrument rather than the musician that makes the music! Never mind all the guitar lessons and thousands of hours of practice!

Every guitarist dreams of having the very best and most expensive guitar, and somehow think that it will improve their skill level. Of course it helps to play a very excellent guitar, but a great musician will get a great sound out of most any instrument, more or less. It's fairly safe to say that you can buy a good quality guitar for several hundred dollars nowadays, and for the vast majority of purposes, it will be OK. The difference between an instrument costing 500 dollars and one costing 2000 is very little.

Of course, it all depends on the guitar, and there are always exceptions at either extreme. For instance, Vintage market a parlor guitar costing well under $200 which was given the 'Best Parlor Guitar Less Than $1000' award by Acoustic Guitar Magazine a few years ago. On the other hand, I went to visit an acquaintance who had no less than five top end Martin guitars of various ages, and none of them were that 'special'.

It also depends on the use you put the guitar to. If you perform acoustically to a really appreciative audience, then the tone and harmonic content are vital to the overall sound. However, if you use the instrument amplified by a pickup inside the guitar or under the saddle, then the finer features of the construction designed to improve the acoustic guitar sound are just wasted.

The best advice is to spend more than $200 and less than $800. You will definitely find something in between that will fit your style. Search prudently, and consider a good second hand instrument, if you are sure it has been cared for. I recently saw an advert on Ebay for an ancient Stella guitar which sold for a few hundred dollars. Naturally, it might not sound like a top range instrument, but it's a slice of history and must have been a very mellow blues guitar. It definitely looked wonderful.
